About
This screening will be introduced by Robert Hughes, Australian Cinémathèque.
Lewis Milestone's Hallelujah, I'm a Bum is an enrapturing, entertaining and entirely eccentric musical like no other. The film tells the story of Bumper (Al Jolson), the beloved 'hobo mayor' of Central Park. Friends with the actual mayor of New York (the Wizard of Oz himself, Frank Morgan), their paths become entangled when Bumper unwittingly falls for the mayor's amnesiac girlfriend June (Madge Evans). Both melancholy and richly funny, it contains double Oscar-winner Milestone's most ingenious visual invention, creatively capturing the rhyming-couplet dialogue and imaginative musical numbers from Rogers and Hart.
