Adapted from a jōruri (traditional Japanese narrative music-drama) by legendary dramatist Monzaemon Chikamatsu, Gonza the Spearman offers a poignant exploration of honour, desire and the crushing weight of social convention. Set during the early years of the Tokugawa shogunate, the film follows Gonza (Hiromi Go), a celebrated young samurai seeking advancement through the study of tea ceremony. When Osai (Shima Iwashita), the wife of a renowned tea master, arranges for him to marry her daughter, a web of misunderstandings, rumours and malicious intrigue leads to accusations of adultery, irrevocably binding their fates.

As rigid codes of conduct demand retribution, director Shinoda transforms a domestic scandal into a devastating tale of individuals trapped within an unforgiving social order. Rejecting overt melodrama, he adopts a restrained and elegant style, allowing tension to accumulate with quiet inevitability. The film’s meticulously composed frames reveal both the beauty and confinement of the world its characters inhabit, while Tōru Takemitsu's sparse score lends an air of melancholy and foreboding.
