About
Billionaire CEO and technical genius Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac) invites Caleb Smith (Domnhall Gleeson), a programmer at his company, to participate in his latest project. Over seven days Caleb must interact with Ava, an A.I. created by Nathan. The robot Ava is a complex character: while Caleb is intrigued by her consciousness, for Nathan, she represents a draft, a template for future A.I.'s and a key into a future full of potential. Like Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' 1818 Alex Garland's stylish feature debut Ex Machina examines the dangerous role of the Scientist in utilising knowledge to create and distort human existence. Exploring the nature of human and mechanical intelligence, Garland raises questions on the emotional connection between adult and machine and the way in which sexual identity plays a role in 'human' interactions.
