About
Japanese auteur Yasujirô Ozu’s gentle intergenerational drama reflects the social changes of post-WW2 Japan, including the desire of young people to pursue greater personal autonomy and break with traditional culture.
Stubborn father Hirayama (Shin Saburi) is dismayed that his daughter, Setsuko (Ineko Arima), has found love on her own terms rather than succumbing to an arranged marriage. He is, however, much gentler with his daughter’s friend Yukiko (Fujiko Yamamoto) and helps rebuild the bridge between another estranged father and daughter.
The first of his films made in colour, Ozu artfully disrupts Agfacolor’s trademark muted tones with pops of bright red throughout.
