About
Born from an angst-driven sketch in his teenage years, Edward Scissorhands is Tim Burton’s definitive work, establishing his mastery of gothic whimsy and his championing of the ‘outsider’. On the edge of a pastel neighbourhood looms a decrepit, gothic mansion wherein an Inventor (Vincent Price) dies while working on his creation: the pale-faced, leather-clad Edward (Johnny Depp), leaving him alone, stuck with elongated scissors for hands. Edward grapples with his metal body extensions along with the fear and curiosity they engender. His condition garners the pity of the local Avon lady Peg (Dianne Wiest) and he joins her and her sympathetic daughter Kim (Winona Ryder) in their white-picket-fence town, quickly becoming a local celebrity - and beginning a fairy-tale romance of Grimm proportions.
