Born from an angst-driven sketch in his teenage years, Edward Scissorhands is Tim Burton’s definitive work, establishing his mastery of gothic whimsy and his championing of the ‘outsider’. On the edge of a pastel neighbourhood looms a decrepit, gothic mansion wherein an Inventor (Vincent Price) dies while working on his creation: the pale-faced, leather-clad Edward (Johnny Depp), leaving him alone, stuck with elongated scissors for hands.
