About
'If you mutilate the body you mutilate the psyche. If you mutilate what is the most private thing – love and desire and pleasure – you mutilate the A, B, C of human beings.' Jocelyne Saab
'Jocelyne Saab's poetic film is dedicated to the contradictory nature of love, manifested in such forms as romance, eroticism, and tragically, misdirected family love. The protagonist, the beautiful Dunia, is seeking the ultimate ecstasy of both mind and body. Hers is a forbidden quest for a woman in a repressive, patriarchal culture, where erotic texts are banned, and outspoken radical academics are physically attacked. Her controversial yearning leads her to study literature and dance at university, at the same time exploring what love, sexuality, and sensuality mean to her personally.' Helen Yeates, Brisbane International Film Festival
Farida Belyazid's Bab Al-Sama Maftuh (A Door To the Sky) 1989 will no longer screen as part of this program. It is replaced with Jocelyne Saab's Dunia (Kiss Me Not on the Eyes) 2005.
