Dreamchild interweaves the true biography of Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with the fantastical memories of the elderly Alice. The octogenarian Mrs Alice Hargreaves (Coral Browne) travels to New York to join celebrations of the centenary of Carroll’s birth, where she is treated as a celebrity and receives an honorary doctorate. Her dream-like recollections drift between her idyllic childhood, with tales recounted to her during a summer on the river by Carroll (the pen name of Rev Charles Dodgson, played by Ian Holm), and hallucinatory encounters with grotesque and uncanny versions of Wonderland inhabitants, including the Mad Hatter, Mock Turtle and others. This film marked the first non-Henson production for the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, using the workshop facility Henson had purchased in London for The Dark Crystal’s creature construction.
