A hidden gem of Soviet cinema, Gennady Shaplikov's A Long Happy Life is a lyrical companion piece to Jean Vigo's L'Atalante 1934 and a moving triumph in its own right. Geologist Victor meets Lena on a bus and quickly falls for her. They begin to share a romance coloured by fatalistic melancholy and soon his promises of 'a long happy life' together seem increasingly unlikely.
