About
In 1916, preteen Linda, her hot-headed brother Bill (Richard Gere) and his lover Abby travel from the streets of Chicago to the wheat fields of the Texas Panhandle in search of work. Here Bill and Abby, who claim to be siblings to avoid unwanted attention, become part of a complicated love triangle. Typical of director Terrence Malick's oeuvre, the cinematography pays close attention to the details of the natural world, weaving into his characters' lives sublime images of wheat whispering in the wind, powdery snow kicked up by horses hooves or the drama of billows of flame burning at night.
Much of the story is shot in twilight, a time in which the labourers’ day had come to an end, and they could play, eat, talk or rest. Cinematographer Néstor Almendros captures this glowing sense of in-between time using as little artificial light as possible, allowing for the softness of darkness to creep into the frame with buildings and people silhouetted against the vastness of the land and sky.
