A wounded soldier (Law) traverses his way across the South, hoping to return to the wife he left behind; back home, his wife Ada (Kidman) is helped by skilful farmer Ruby Thewes (Zellweger) in an ongoing struggle to survive the elements and the war that tears their nation apart. John Seale’s Oscar-nominated cinematography captures the incredible scale of the journey while underlining the unforgiving nature of the terrain that these characters inhabit.
