About
The final major film role of Maggie Cheung, Clean is an engrossing, unflinching portrait of Emily Wang, a woman striving to take control of her life after the death of her rocker boyfriend and her own arrest for drug possession. Having hit rock bottom, Emily moves in with her friend Elena (Béatrice Dalle) while fighting to regain custody of her son, who is being raised by her father-in-law (Nick Nolte). Cheung gives a fearless, often spiky lead performance — for which she received the Best Actress award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival — in this reunion with celebrated French director Olivier Assayas, who previously directed her in Irma Vep 1996. Assayas brings an intimate and empathetic touch to this examination of the possibility of change, buttressed by a characteristically eclectic soundtrack, including original songs written by Mazzy Star's David Roback and performed by Cheung.
