'“Italian auteur Nanni Moretti (The Son’s Room) muses on cinema, his native Italy, and his own mortality in this much-loved comedy/personal essay, which earned the inventive filmmaker Best Director honours at Cannes and the Donatello Award for best Italian film.
Moretti’s confessional “diary” is structured in three sections. In part one, the ever deadpan Moretti zips around Rome on his Vespa scooter, commenting on architecture and Italian cinema; lamenting the critical love for Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer; encountering Jennifer Beals of Flashdance (a movie Moretti professes to love); and visiting the site of Pasolini’s murder. Part two has Moretti retreating to the Aeolian Islands to work on a screenplay and visit a friend, a TV-hating expert on Joyce's 'Ulysses'. Part three chronicles Moretti's misadventures in the Italian healthcare system after a medical crisis. Simultaneously lighthearted and profound, this deft documentary-fiction hybrid reveals the touch of a gifted tragicomedian. Caro Diario is presented here in a new restoration overseen by its distinguished cinematographer, Giuseppe Lanci.' Film Comment
