Breaker Morant, set in South Africa during the Second Boer War, recounts the compelling true story of soldiers who were court-martialled for the execution of prisoners of war.
A tense courtroom drama, the story centres on Australian mounted soldiers Morant (Edward Woodward), Handcock (Bryan Brown) and Witten (Lewis Fitz-Gerald), who fought for the British Army. An irregular unit of soldiers, their riding troop was created to counter hit-and-run raids carried out by the Boers. Far from the heat of the battlefield, defence attorney Major Thomas (Jack Thompson) must argue for the men’s lives against the charge of murder. Breaker Morant was nominated for a 1981 Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.
