Puppeteer, Craig (John Cusack) is struggling to make ends meet working in his overlooked artform, and takes a job as a clerk for a mysterious corporation. When he finds a door leading directly into the mind of the actor John Malkovich, he, along with his animal obsessed wife (Cameron Diaz) and co-worker crush (Catherine Keener) take control and set about using Malkovich to advance their own agendas. Puppetry metaphors run deep in this beloved collaboration between director Spike Jones and writer Andy Kaufman.
