About
An entrancingly idiosyncratic depiction of a man pushed to the edge by the gentrification of his British hometown. Shot on crackly black-and-white 16mm film stock, Bait is a droll and bewitching comedy-melodrama following Martin, a lifelong fisherman who feels that his industry and raison d’être are being destroyed by the increasing touristification of his Cornwall village. His fight to reclaim his own sense of self-worth is hampered by waves of seasonal holiday-makers and his brother’s capitulation to the changing economy. Delivered with a Guy Maddin-esque anachronistic aesthetic, Mark Jenkin’s debut film is a fascinating curio that examines social dislocation with astuteness and wit.
