About
Sergei Parajanov’s final completed film, dedicated to his friend Andrei Tarkovsky, follows a minstrel who embarks on a 1001 day journey to make his fortune and marry his beloved. Parajanov and his co-director Dodo Abashidze took Mikhail Lermontov’s poetic telling of an ancient fable, which had captivated Parajanov as a child, as a starting point for this sumptuous, mesmeric wonder of a film. Steeped in the folk traditions of Azerbaijan and infused by a memorable score by Dzhavanshir Kuliyev, Ashik Kerib is a love letter to the Caucasus.
