About
['The Magician'] was created in an atmosphere of high spirits despite the black components in the tale we were spinning. Most certainly this had to do with the feeling of camaraderie in our troupe of jesters, for such we were during our Malmö period.
The Magician will screen from an archival 35mm film print.
Although it is often (and unfairly) overlooked in discussions around Bergman's body of work, The Magician is a deviously captivating puzzle box. The film is a battle of wits between Albert Vogler (Max von Sydow), the titular magician, and Dr Vergerus (Gunnar Björnstrand), the earnest medical expert tasked with proving Vogler's magic act to be fraudulent. Shot in sumptuous black-and-white, The Magician mixes its drama with plenty of lively twists and turns. The cast – filled with with Bergman repertory favourites – bring life to their characters in this enthralling vision of trickery and illusion.
