About
Animal Kingdom is a stylish neo noir set in Melbourne's criminal underworld. After his mother dies from a heroin overdose, Joshua (James Frecheville) is taken in by his estranged grandmother (Jacki Weaver) who runs the family business of armed robbery, drugs and murder. The withdrawn Joshua soon finds himself led into a life of crime and retribution with his dangerous relatives, led by the psychopathic Andrew (Ben Mendelsohn). Loosely inspired by the real-life Pettingill family and police shootings in Melbourne during the late 1980s, David Michôd's taut film imagines a world where the distinctions between predator and prey are always dangerously close.
