About
Following our comprehensive retrospective of Ryusuke Hamaguchi as part of Asia Pacific Triennial Cinema in 2025, join us for the Queensland premiere of the Japanese filmmaker's acclaimed new film All of a Sudden.
Winner of the Best Actress award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival — shared jointly between leads Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto — celebrated Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi's latest work All of a Sudden is a sublimely intimate study of connection. Based on the epistolary non-fiction book 'You and I – The Illness Suddenly Get Worse', the film explores the burgeoning friendship between Marie-Lou (Efira), the director of an aged care facility in Paris, and the terminally ill theatre director Mari (Okamoto), as they discuss art, philosophy and their own place in the world. Hamaguchi's spellbinding film is a delicately balanced feat that affirms his deeply affecting, humanistic vision of cinema.
This screening is presented by arrangement with Potential Films and Wonderfilm.
