About
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the films co-directors, Adam C Briggs and Sam Dixon, moderated by Sydney-based filmmaker James Vaughan.
Directed by Brisbane-based filmmakers Adam C Briggs and Sam Dixon, A Grand Mockery is a singular, surreal odyssey into the mind of its protagonist Josie (Dixon). A cinema worker by day, the Möbius strip indignity of his job — combined with seemingly ceaseless consumption of wine — begin to wear down his psyche, and a new landscape of reality emerges. A microbudget production shot on luminous, scratchy Super 8 stock, the film has a unique tactile quality that seemingly sweats and swelters alongside its characters. After its premiere at SXSW Sydney in 2024 (where it was awarded Best Feature Film), A Grand Mockery has screened to acclaim at international festivals, receiving the Best Director award at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain. The film represents a bold new entry in Australia's lineage of DIY filmmaking, and showcases the continued emergence of two key voices in the underground Australian cinema landscape.
