Discover a fresh perspective on the Australian Collection with Words & Pictures, an ongoing project that invites local artists and writers to respond to artworks in the Australian Collection. Take inspiration, and use the pencils and paper provided to create your own response through drawing or writing.

This season’s Words & Pictures inspiration comes from Michelle Law, Sydney-based author, playwright and screenwriter. Look for Michelle’s response alongside the following artworks:

Unknown Jewellers Goldfields bar brooches c.1880-1915
Kenneth Macqueen Wheat motive c.1959

‘As an Australian-born Asian settler on Indigenous land, the works in this collection deepened a process of soul searching for me. Being able to literally sit amid cultural markers of our nation’s history enabled me to further interrogate my cultural identity and Australia’s identity as a nation, and understand how we’ve arrived at this point in history and how far we have yet to go.’ - Michelle Law

Please note these responses have been developed in response to artworks in the Australian Collection, and do not reflect the views of the artists or QAGOMA.
