SYNOPSIS

If I had made the film immediately after [Klaus Kinski's] death, I'm sure it would have been much darker. Today I can laugh about what happened between us; I see the bizarre side of everything and look back with some serenity.

My Best Fiend is an absorbing and wildly entertaining portrait of Herzog's tumultuous relationship with his five-time collaborator Klaus Kinski. Their work together is legendary for their conflicts – from Kinski's violent tantrums on set to Herzog's threats to murder his star – but also for the extraordinary films they made together: beginning with 1972's Aguirre, the Wrath of God and ending with Cobra Verde 1987. Herzog digs deep into the mythos of their work, while also exploring what made Kinski such a revelation on screen. Neither a hagiography nor a damnation, My Best Fiend is an essential work in understanding the puzzle of these two artists.
