In a Korean fishing village, the newly married Hae-soon becomes widowed when her husband dies at sea on a fishing voyage. She joins a community of widows in the village but soon finds herself pursued by a young coal miner. Their liaison causes a scandal that drives tragic chaos into both of their lives. Director Kim Soo-yong crafts a riveting tale of doomed romance that succeeds as both melodrama and as commentary on the social burdens faced by women. The lead actors deliver commanding performances in their complex roles, while the community life in the village is depicted with a moving richness and honesty.
