During World War Two, Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) plunders a Norwegian town in search of the Tesseract, a mystical object of immense power. Meanwhile in Brooklyn, 'Skinny' Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is refused enlistment in the US Army. Rogers's grit nonetheless results in his recruitment in an experimental Super Soldier project, which, although successful, sees Captain America spruiking war bonds as his first assignment. Rogers sparks a relationship with Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) before discovering that childhood friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) has disappeared behind enemy lines. When Rogers discovers Schmidt's evil organisation Hydra is using the Tesseract to develop weaponry, he comes into his own as Captain America, complete with Vibranium shield.
