About
Boccaccio '70 will screen from a 2K digital restoration.
An anthology film inspired by the works of eponymous 14th century poet Giovanni Boccaccio, with each of the four episodes exploring issues of love and lust in contemporary Italy. Visconti was joined by three major figures from Italian cinema – Mario Monicelli, Federico Fellini and Vittorio De Sica – to each direct a segment of the film. Monicelli’s contribution was infamously cut for most international releases, but is included here alongside the other three episodes in a rare presentation of the entire work.
The first episode (directed by Monicelli) 'Renzo and Luciana' follows a young married couple as they attempt to avoid the ire of their employers who have forbidden marriage and pregnancy while under their employ. In Fellini’s 'The Temptation of Dr Antonio', a middle-aged doctor who sees himself as a guardian of prevailing morality becomes absurdly distressed by a salacious billboard featuring Anita Ekberg. Visconti’s 'The Job' includes a captivating turn from screen legend Romy Schneider, with a plot that examines a wealthy couple whose marriage faces collapse after the husband is publicly revealed to be frequenting prostitutes. De Sica’s concluding episode 'The Raffle' stars Sophia Loren as a woman who stages a lucrative contest to raffle off a night in her bed.
Boccaccio ’70 is a largely jaunty delight that gives insight into cinematic stylings of the era, acting as a showcase for all four filmmakers to demonstrate their skills while also providing juicy roles for some of the most iconic actresses in European cinema.
