About
Deep Red will screen from a digital restoration by La Cineteca Nazionale, Rome. The screening will be of the full director's cut, in Italian with English subtitles.
Often vying for the mantle of Dario Argento's greatest achievement, Deep Red is a stunning giallo masterwork. It features everything that made the genre so beloved: mysterious murderers, lurid colour, shocking twists, and Rube Golbdberg-esque set pieces of sensational slaughter. Combined with Goblin's frenetic score and Luigi Kuveiller's inspired cinematography, this is giallo cinema at its peak.
The film's narrative finds musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings, of Blow-Up 1966 fame) walking home through Rome one night when he sees a medium, Helga Ulmann, being murdered in her apartment. He attempts to intervene but arrives too late to save her life. Marcus and reporter Gianna begin to make their own investigations into the woman's murder, and soon find themselves targeted by the vicious killer.
Deep Red is a beautifully choreographed thriller of the highest order. Argento is at his hyper-stylised best here, throwing every cinematic technique he can dream up at the screen to major effect. The director's cut presented here is Argento's uncompromised vision, allowing him further time to establish the atmosphere of his beloved Rome and let the full force of the murders hit the audience.
