About
We are extremely delighted to announce that Opera will be screening from Dario Argento's personal 35mm print of the film, held at La Cineteca Nazionale in Rome. It will be the full director's cut, in Italian with English subtitles.
Often spoken of as Dario Argento's last true masterpiece, Opera is a virtuosic display of giallo from the genre's finest maestro. The film is a masterclass in clockwork precision, overflowing with style and bloody set-pieces that rank among the director's best.
The film's plot follows Betty, a young opera singer who gets her big break in a production of Verdi's Macbeth after the original star is injured in a car accident. Her moment of triumph becomes an ordeal, however, when an obsessed murderer begins killing her friends and co-stars – while forcing Betty to watch.
Opera is an expertly crafted thriller, rollicking along relentlessly as Betty tries desperately to stop the murders. The powerful soundtrack was put together by Argento regular Claudio Simonetti, alongside former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman and the legendary Brian Eno. The film's vicious mystery translated to massive box office success and marked a culmination of the stylistic and thematic threads that had been emerging as the world of giallo cinema developed.
Alternative title: Terror at the Opera
