SYNOPSIS

Marcel Carné's tragic tale of Jean, an army deserter (the inimitable Jean Gabin), trying to start a new life in the port city of Le Havre. In noir cinema, nothing can ever be so easy and he quickly becomes wrapped up in a brewing conflict between a shopkeeper and a local gangster – further complicated by Jean's infatuation with the shopkeeper's beautiful goddaughter. Port of Shadows is engulfed in plumes of smoky French romanticism. It is a moody drama haunted by melancholy, where wounded characters try to do their best in a corrupt world. One of Carné's true masterpieces.
