The Australian Cinémathèque is proud to present the Australian premiere of Czech filmmaker and stop-motion innovator Jan Švankmajer's most recent (and reportedly final) feature film, Insects 2018. A master of modern surrealism, Švankmajer's cinematic works transcend genre and media, mixing beguiling live action footage with disturbingly fantastical animation.
Insects is based on a play from 1922 entitled 'Pictures from Insects' Life', which explores the strange commonalities between the lives of humans and insects. Nothing is ever so simple with Švankmajer, however, and he turns this premise into a meta commentary on a production of the play - with the director himself appearing to comment on proceedings and reveal his secretive tricks. The film is another fascinating entry in the long-running career of one of the monumental figures of Czech cinema.
