SYNOPSIS

Talking About Trees follows four Sudanese film directors as they attempt to revive a cinema culture in a country controlled by a fundamentalist government.

Winner of the 2019 Berlin Film Festival’s Documentary and Audience Awards, the film tracks the heroic efforts of the veteran filmmakers who, fuelled by their deep love of cinema and an unshakeable belief in sharing stories, work tirelessly to break through bureaucratic resistance to bring cinema back to Sudan. Bonded through their experiences of filmmaking – and the persecution and torture inflicted on filmmakers over the years by successive governments – these men maintain humour and determination in the face of systematic political opposition.
