About
BIFF’s program of short films celebrates the unique craft of short-form filmmaking — a platform for emerging filmmakers that delicately balances the nuanced skill of storytelling and visual language, with imagination the only limitation. QAGOMA is thrilled to present its inaugural BIFF Short Film Awards in 2019, including the Screen Queensland Short Film Award for Queensland-made shorts, with the goal of discovering and supporting the next generation of Queensland’s creative talent.
Gertrude
Gertrude is a young girl who believes without a doubt that she is destined for greatness; she has lots of talents but is distracted by the growing conflict between her parents, which finally leads her to her true calling.
The Walking Fish
With a dream to venture into the human world and evolve into the perfect individual, an amphibious sea creature hopes to overcome the boundaries of her body and transform into a human woman. But even among the humans she remains restless.
Minor Key
A tender and colourful portrait of a man disconnected from the world, and his son's attempt to reach out to him.
Blackwood
Blackwood intertwines spoken word with traditional narrative form to explore the intricacies of family, self-love and empowerment and, more subtly, the social politics that exist within small-town Australia.
Raymonde or the Vertical Escape
Stitching 2D and stop-motion animation together, Raymonde or the Vertical Escape is a beautiful tale of a fed-up owl. Tired of peas, aphids, dirty panties and digging in her kitchen garden, she longs for sex, love and the vastness of the sky. Having always looked to her faith for answers, Raymonde takes a new approach to liberate herself.
Troll Bridge
An old barbarian and his talking horse embark on a suicidal quest to battle a bridge troll. Troll Bridge is a live-action, hand-animated hybrid,
lovingly retelling the Discworld fairytale by Sir Terry Pratchett.
