About
Winner of the Best Director award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Young Ahmed is an incisive drama about religious extremism from the acclaimed Dardenne brothers.
The teenage Ahmed, radicalised by the local imam in his small Belgian town, determines that he must murder his teacher for what he perceives as her moral crimes. In their typically understated style, the fraternal double Palme d’Or winners have constructed a suspenseful depiction of ideological fanaticism that looks at the dangers of social isolation with clear-eyed empathy and insight. Their naturalistic aesthetic and the subtle performances of the cast deliver an absorbing, deliberately unglamorous study of a community dealing with a teen boy’s dangerous alienation.
