SYNOPSIS

Restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive, Barbara Loden’s Wanda re-emerges as one of the absolute rarities in 1970s American cinema: a distinctly naturalistic female voice, remarkably poignant and unsparingly honest.

Loden’s lone feature film, which she would write, direct and star in, refuses easy interpretation. Shot in a quasi-documentary style on location in Coal Country, this 16mm low-budget debut follows a middle-class mother in Eastern Pennsylvania. Bleakly funny, evocative and unapologetically authentic, Wanda is a thoughtful and heart-breaking look at those deemed losers in the game of life, characters Loden holds worthy of our time and attention.
