In Driving Miss Daisy, civil rights and the religious prejudice of America’s Deep South serve as a backdrop to the unlikely friendship between an elderly woman and her African- American chauffer. Set in Georgia and opening in 1948, Driving Miss Daisy encompasses the 25-year friendship between Daisy (Jessica Tandy) and her chauffeur (Morgan Freeman). With a lightness of touch Beresford balances humour and subtle performances to deliver a rich portrait of his two leads. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Alfred Uhry with a sweeping score by Hans Zimmer, the film won a slew of awards including the 1990 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actress in a Lead Role. This new 4K restoration was presented this year in the Cannes Classics selection.
