About
Film censorship is a heated and ongoing debate. Constructed from redacted film clips of vice, [CENSORED] reflects on the role of the viewer and the censors who seek to protect us. Writer-director Sari Braithwaite spent three years watching censored scenes from foreign films screened in Australia between 1958 and 1971. Braithwaite reflects on the act of ‘deep violence’ in extracting these scenes from the films. [CENSORED] is a collage of birth, sex and violence punctuated by flickering film projections and set against a brass soundtrack by Munro Melano & The End. Following the screening, film historian Frances Bonner will lead a discussion on the history of film censorship in Australia and changing attitudes to sexual themes and violence on screen. The film draws on the massive amount of censored material held in the National Archives of Australia. This is a chance to hear more about this incredible archive.
