SYNOPSIS

Sexy Durga 2017 is a searing film made in response to what director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan sees as the hypocritical misogyny in Indian culture: “I want to show the contrast. The goddess Durga is a woman. Men bleed for her, they give her their flesh, they give everything. But real women in India are treated very differently. If a woman walks outdoors after dark, she's seen as a prostitute.”

‘Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s improvised night-time road movie – which won the prestigious Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival – is driven by a punk sensibility and a great sense of energy. It opens in the middle of a festival, Durga (Rajshree Deshpandey) and Kabeer (Vishnu Vedh) are fleeing to a railway station in rural Kerala to escape the anger of their parents and hitch a ride with four young guys in a small van. The scattershot film blends evocative local rituals, shot documentary style, with the road-bound plight of the couple.’ Edinburgh International Film Festival
