SYNOPSIS

The Dressmaker’s Daughter 2008 dir. Huni Bolliger (6 mins)

"The Dressmaker’s Daughter is a film made for my Master’s of Animation at The Victorian College of the Arts, 2008. Techniques include stop motion puppet animation, hand painted frames, Photoshop and After Effects composites. Music by Forbes Hawkin." Huni Bolliger

Ashputtle or the Mother's Ghost 1998 dir. Susi Allender, Nag Vladermersky (11 mins)

"A mother does what has to be done to help her daughter - even if it means returning from the grave. A retelling of a traditional folktale (Grimm’s ‘Ashputtle’ as reworked by Angela Carter). Ashputtle is an unloved, uncared for and barely human child until her dead mother rises from the grave to look after her. It is a beautifully cut-out animation that explores themes of identity, responsibility, disintegration and transformation, in a bold and vibrant visual style." Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne

Eclipse 1999 dir. Jill Carter-Hansen (3:47 mins)

"Beneath a full moon, a volcano sleeps. Across the dark lake a boat is rowed. Strange events release creative forces to confront the danger at hand. The film’s major award winning music composition - utilising the artist’s evocative voice chants - reinforces this dreamlike tale as it unfolds to reveal mysterious powers of water and moon, embodied in the feminine." Jill Carter-Hansen

Butterflies 2012 dir. Isabel Peppard (13 mins)

"A young artist struggles to make a living selling her drawings on the sidewalk. One day a sinister businessman recognises her talent and offers her a paying job. The prospect seems inviting but the reality threatens to kill her imagination....." Isabel Peppard

Della Mortika: Carousel of Shame 2018 dir. Marisa Martin (17 mins)

"This is the fantastical world of Della Mortika, where steam is king, where life is hard, but where adventure is always adventure. Della Mortika is a steampunk world expressed through novels, artwork and a short animated film.

The film is set inside a pop-up book from which emerge the stories of Della Mortika, where a melting pot of characters embark on a series of exciting adventures. We meet three English sisters: Abigail, Beatrix and Zarah Della Morte who are searching for their missing parents, a Russian soldier trying to make his mark on the world, an Irish scamp just getting by, an Aboriginal boy wanting to become a great inventor and an Evil Baron intent on controlling the city.  Their paths cross, their lives intermingle, their fates are entwined.

The normal line of history is altered in this world and while some parts appear old fashioned, others appear strangely futuristic. This world is archaic and advanced, Dickensian and Orwellian, elegant and spooky." Marisa Martin

The Girl Who Swallowed Bees 2007 dir. Paul McDermott (9 mins)

"A young girl consumed by bitterness decides to take drastic and irredeemable measures to put an end to her continual suffering. After running through a number of darkly humorous options for her demise she settles on the terribly romantic 'death by swallowing bees'. Intent on her mission, she sets off for the woods where 'bees are said to hide'. She disturbs a hive only to discover, to her amazement, the bees have other plans for her and her bitter heart."
