Celebrated Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray film Mahanagar (The Big City) 1963 is set in Kolkata in 1955 and focuses on a Bengali family dealing with social change and the developing role of women as breadwinners within middle-class households. When her husband loses his job, Arati – the calm centre of family life – looks for paid work. Employed as a knitting machine salesperson, her burgeoning confidence and financial successes are matched by the growing discomfort of her husband and consternation of her father-in-law.
