The Stranger will screen from an imported 35mm film print.
Rarely screened publicly over the last half century due to various legal battles and never released on digital home media, Visconti’s The Stranger is a forceful and faithful adaptation of Albert Camus’ classic novel. Marcello Mastroianni inhabits the lead role of Meursault, a French Algerian man whose growing disengagement with social mores is employed against him after he is arrested for murder.
While staying steadfastly close to the narrative machination of Camus’ original text, Visconti powerfully conveys the absurdism of his characters’ situations amidst the sweaty luminescence of the Algerian coastline. Mastroianni gives a compelling performance that understands the melancholy of Meursault’s condition, even when with his lover Marie (icon of French cinema Anna Karina).
