SYNOPSIS

Ingmar Bergman's encore. More than two decades after the release of Fanny and Alexander 1982, Bergman emerged from directorial retirement for one final film.

Saraband acts as a loose sequel to Scenes from a Marriage 1973, reuniting Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson as Marianne and Johan – 30 years on from their separation. Bergman wrote and directed the film while he was in his 80s, after a lifetime of marriages and children to which he admitted that he was not particularly devoted. His depiction of a former couple who have faced love and regret is subtle, but superb. Age was unable to diminish his skill in crafting characters filled with complex foibles.

The film was shot digitally and was originally broadcast as a TV-movie in Sweden. Yet Saraband remains visually warm and compelling. Ullmann and Josephson bring their talents as performers and their experiences in life to the characters, filling them with life.

Saraband is a heartfelt swan song from one of the greatest of all European filmmakers. It is a resounding epilogue and one last gift from Bergman to cinema lovers across the world.
