Join Reuben Keehan, Curator, Contemporary Asian Art, as he introduces ‘Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles’. In her catalogue essay, exhibition curator Mami Kataoka (Director, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo) suggests that Shiota’s work can be understood as an exploration of dualities: presence and absence; inside and outside; dreams and reality; life and death. This talk will unpack some of these ideas through a selection of works in the exhibition, focusing on Shiota’s balance of beauty and horror, from her formative years as a student in Japan, Australia and Germany, to the prolific cosmopolitanism of her practice today.
