Australian Art Curators Ellie Buttrose and Samantha Littley will engage Members in a two-part conversation that explores the work of Australian artists Phuong Ngo, Koji Ryui, Yasmin Smith and Vipoo Srivilasa, and artworks by several West Asian artists, among them Nazgol Ansarinia, Maryam Ayeen and Abaas Shahsavar, and Alia Farid.
While ceramicists Smith and Srivilasa create disparate objects, their artworks for APT10 both draw parallels between cultures. In Smith’s case, casts of Eucalyptus grandis native to Australia and Ci zhu bamboo from Jiajiang County, Sichuan Province, China, generate dialogue around introduced species and climate change. Srivilasa’s secular deities pay homage to Thailand, and acknowledge what his relocation to Australia has meant to him.
Ryui and Farid’s found and fabricated objects transform the spaces they inhabit, while collaboration forms the basis of work by husband and wife duo Ayeen and Shahsavar, and Ngo whose diptychs have been individualised by over 100 co-creators from his personal and professional networks.
