About
Discuss art, life, culture and creativity from the comfort of your own home at the QAGOMA Members Virtual Book Club or join us at one of the meetings at the Gallery. After a break in December, from January through to May the titles on the reading list will connect to, contextualise and complement ideas presented in the tenth iteration of the Gallery’s flagship exhibition series, ‘The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’. China Room (2021), by Sunjeev Sahota Session 1: Wed 16 Feb, 3.00pm | Virtual Session 2: Thu 17 Feb, 10.30am | On-site Session 3: Sat 19 Feb, 3.00pm | On-site Partly inspired by award-winning author Sunjeev Sahota’s family history, China Room is a deft exploration of how systems of power circumscribe individual lives and a deeply moving portrait of the unconquerable human capacity to resist them. Longlisted for the Booker Prize 2021, Sahota weaves back and forth between a grandmother’s story as a young bride and her grandson’s struggle to free himself from drugs. At once sweeping and intimate, lush and propulsive, it is a stunning achievement from a contemporary master.
