About
In this ongoing series, hear from local contemporary artists as they draw connections between artworks in the Australian collection display, weaving an idiosyncratic narrative of influence and connection. In this instalment, coinciding with International Women's Day, hear artist Judy Watson speak about her work sacred ground beating heart 1989 in relation to other works in the Australian collection display.
Judy Watson was born in 1959 in Mundubbera, Queensland, Australia. Watson's matrilineal family is from Waanyi country in Northwest Queensland and her oeuvre – which includes painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture and video – is inspired by Aboriginal history and culture. In 2016, she won The Queensland Indigenous Artist Public Art Commission for her bronze sculpture tow row, which is installed at the entrance to the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).
