2017 QAGOMA Foundation Appeal
‘One of the world’s most renowned artists, James Turrell has been engaged to create an “Architectural Light” work that will breathe new life into the glass facade of the Gallery of Modern Art and complete the original design intention for the building. In its tenth year, your experience of GOMA is to be cast in a brilliant new light.’‘

The Gallery’s generous supporters have helped us secure many important works for the Collection through the Foundation Appeal. This year’s Appeal, however, presents an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to the transformation of GOMA itself.
We invite you to support a major new work by internationally renowned artist James Turrell (United States, b.1943) — an architectural light commission that will illuminate the exterior of GOMA from within.
Since the 1960s, Turrell has created an expansive body of work that offers profound revelations about perception and the materiality of light. His large-scale installations celebrate the optical and emotional effects of luminosity.
GOMA is one of Australia’s most celebrated cultural and architectural landmarks and this new work — commissioned to mark GOMA turning ten — will alter the way in which we experience this much-loved building.
The Queensland Government has generously contributed funds towards the development of this ambitious project and the Gallery has been fortunate to receive an outstanding lead donation from Paul and Susan Taylor, along with a generous contribution from the Neilson Foundation.
In helping us to realise this extraordinary project — which will undoubtedly become an iconic feature of Brisbane’s cityscape — you will extend our ability to connect with audiences outside the Gallery’s opening hours, as well as beyond its walls.
Donate now to help us realise this magnificent new commission. Donations of all sizes are welcome, and those of $2 or more are tax deductible. Contributions of $4000 or more qualify donors for Foundation membership, and support from existing Foundation members will be credited towards their membership.
We sincerely appreciate your support for this magnificent new commission.
WE HAVE OUR DAY CLOTHES, BUT WHEN WE GO OUT AT NIGHT WE OFTEN DRESS UP. LIKE BUILDINGS, WE HAVE A DIFFERENT LIFE AT NIGHT, AND I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO GIVE THIS LIFE TO BUILDINGS, TO CLOAK THESE STRUCTURES IN A BEAUTIFUL RAIMENT OF LIGHT. IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH LIGHT CAN CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION OF A BUILDING.James Turrell, 2016
