John Pule

Drawing words

When artist John Pule was a child his family left their village on the small island of Niue in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to start a new life in New Zealand. He grew up hearing stories about his home and learning about his culture from pictures on special bark mats (called hiapo) that travelled with his family from Niue. As an adult John started writing stories and painting pictures about his life and culture.

You can watch John narrate one of the stories from his novel The shark that ate the sun.
