Dear Queensland

QAGOMA and artist Shannon Novak, invite members of Queensland’s LGBTQI+ communities to pen a virtual letter to Queenslanders, reflecting on their challenges and triumphs. The submissions will form part of an important archive centering and amplifying voices from LGBTQI+ communities.

This forms part of Make Visible, an ongoing community led project developed by artist, curator, and activist Shannon Novak, whose work features as part of APT10. The aim of the project is to grow support for the LGBTQI+ communities worldwide by making visible challenges and triumphs for these communities.
If you need support, free support services for LGBTQI+ people are available.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can participate?

Anyone who is part of LGBTQI+ communities, who has lived or currently lives in Queensland.

LGBTQI+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, and the plus sign represents other people marginalised by sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and/or sex characteristics.

We use the LGBTQI+ acronym and umbrella term with a view to being as inclusive as possible, but acknowledge this may not work for everyone.

There are other umbrella terms for the community including rainbow, queer, and variations on the LGBTQI+ acronym like LGBT and LGBTQIA2, all of which have a place and may be used.

Why should I participate?

“LGBTQI+ people in Australia experience highly disproportionate rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide – recent statistics (2021) revealing between three to fifteen times higher than non-LGBTQI+ people. One thing we can do to help drive these numbers down is to make visible the challenges we face so people can see what we are going through and consider ways they may be able to support us. It’s about getting our struggles out in the open and talking about them, letting people know what life is really like for us day to day. By participating in this project, you help to get that conversation rolling, increase public awareness, and grow local support.

Another key reason to participate is to grow a record of our history so our upcoming LGBTQI+ youth have a local LGBTQI+ history to read about. Currently there is very little to no local LGBTQI+ history being recorded in our public museums and libraries, and that needs to change. Cataloguing your experiences at QAGOMA sparks a movement towards a more inclusive and representative archive that all can access and be inspired by”.
