VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

QAGOMA is supported by volunteers who perform important roles in the following areas of the Gallery's operations.

CURATORIAL

The Gallery’s Curatorial Volunteer Program is aimed primarily at tertiary students and graduates of Art History and Curatorship. The Program has limited places for which there is strong demand, sadly we can’t help everyone. Acceptance into the Program, and the type of work allocated to volunteers, is largely dependent on the projects currently being undertaken by our staff.

Curatorial volunteers should:

  • Possess strong research and writing skills
  • Be computer literate
  • Be able to work reasonably independently
  • Understand that a volunteer role will not lead to paid employment

If you would like to formally register for consideration in the Program, please forward a copy of your CV and covering letter to let us know what you are particularly passionate about, or are keen to learn. It would be helpful if you included a sample of your writing, such as an essay, article or review. You should also indicate how regularly and over what duration you might be able to offer your time. If a volunteer position becomes available which we feel matches your skills you will be contacted.

VOLUNTEER GUIDES

The Gallery's dedicated volunteer guides conduct informative 30-40 minute tours of featured exhibitions and the Gallery's Collection at both the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art.

Guided tours are also available for visitors who are Deaf, visitors who are hard of hearing, visitors with low vision and visitors living with dementia. Training and support are provided for guides who deliver tours for visitors with disability.

QAGOMA is open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday. Guided tours are scheduled most days the Gallery is open, except between 24 December and 1 January. Volunteer guides are expected to attend 80% of their fortnightly rostered guiding days between the hours of 10.00am and 3.00pm.

To join our program, those people who have expressed interest participate in a selection process. This is followed by a structured training program, conducted over a twelve month period. During this time, trainees must also undertake self-directed study and participate in regular assessment. On successful completion of the training program, trainees join the Volunteer Guide team and commit to a roster and an on-going learning program.

The Gallery is looking for people who:

  • Can communicate positively with people of different ages, backgrounds, cultures and abilities
  • Love to learn
  • Have a keen interest in art
  • Have the time to commit to the role
  • Are flexible and enjoy working with others in a team situation
  • Are computer literate and have access to email account
  • Understand that this volunteer role will not lead to paid employment.

Intakes of trainee guides occur every few years. We anticipate the next intake to occur in 2017-18. For further information please submit an enquiry below.
