27 June – 4 October 2009 Xstrata Coal Queensland Artists’ Gallery, QAG
This exhibition explores the Gallery’s holdings of photographs made in Queensland in the years since the state was formed in 1859. It will be the Gallery’s first profile of the broad sweep of Queensland photography from its beginnings to the present day. Importantly, the exhibition coincides with the celebration of the sesquicentenary of the creation of Queensland.
‘150 Years: Photography in Queensland’ honours the important history of photography in this state. This display emphasises the variety of contexts in which photography has been used in Queensland: as a tool of industry, in the family and by artists as a personal medium of expression.
‘150 Years: Photography in Queensland from the Gallery’s Collection’ is accompanied by an 8-page exhibition brochure featuring an essay by Michael Hawker, Curatorial Assistant, Australian Art to 1970 and selected reproductions of the Gallery’s outstanding photographic holdings. The exhibition brochure is available from the Gallery Store and online.
