Ruangrupa is an artist collective established in 2000. Organisers as well as practitioners, Ruangrupa’s activities are many and varied, including operating a non-profit space in Jakarta, running the international video festival OK Video, publishing the journal Karbon, and organising workshops and residencies. Their practice hinges on critical engagement with ‘the city’ as both an idea and a physical environment. Their spontaneous, experimental projects are characterised by cultural exchange, renegade creativity, and the construction of narratives in which personal experience, imagination and memory hold as much authority as official history. Inspired by Indonesian rock of the 1970s, and accounts of Queensland’s underground music scene during the Joh Bjelke-Petersen era, Ruangrupa’s APT7 presentation is a mini museum of memorabilia relating to the story of a fictitious Indonesian band and their unlikely influence on the Brisbane music scene.
